Night To Remember, Jadi Anak Asuh

Band-band Surabaya kembali tak berdaya. Di pentas LA Light Start Up 2009 A Frame to Fame yang diselenggarakan di Stadion Tambaksari, Sabtu (15/8), yang terpilih sebagai jawara adalah Night To Remember (NTR) dari Jember.

Dalam acara Surya Hot Music Competition akhir Juli lalu, dua grup band asal Jember juga masuk 10 Besar dan salah satunya, AnggerMunie menjadi Juara 3. Sedang Juara 1 ditempati D’Kill (Malang), dan Geranium dari Lumajang sebagai Juara 2.

Hasil tersebut juga membuat Piyu, sang penggagas acara Start Up 2009 heran. “Saya pun heran, ke mana band-band Surabaya yang berkualitas itu,” cetus gitaris grup band Padi ini saat ditemui usai acara Superband Concert di Stadion Tambaksari yang berakhir Minggu (16/8) dini hari.

NTR, menurut Piyu, memiliki karakter yang kuat. Band yang diawaki Kandar (gitar), Dema (vokal/keyboard), Arbillsan (gitar), Kiky (drum), dan Waskee (bas) ini juga memasukkan musik mereka dalam genre power pop, jenis musik yang tak banyak digeluti pemusik-pemusik muda Jatim.

“Yang lain langsung menyatakan musik mereka adalah pop progresif, pop rock, pop alternatif dan sejenisnya yang sudah ada sebelumnya. Itu kan artinya tidak ada yang baru yang mereka hadirkan di belantika musik kita,” papar pemilik nama lengkap Satriyo Yudi Wahono ini.

Atas kemenangan tersebut, NTR berhak atas hadiah sebesar Rp 10 juta rupiah. Selain itu, sebagai Superband, NTR juga mendapat peluang masuk dapur rekaman untuk dua buah album sekaligus, plus sebuah album optional yang nantinya digarap E-Motion Entertainment.

Sedang sembilan grup band lainnya tetap punya peluang. Mereka akan gabung dalam sebuah album kompilasi yang juga dikerjakan E-Motion Entertainment. “Treatment mereka sama dengan artis-artis lain seperti Drive dan Titi Kamal, karena album kompilasi ini juga akan diedarkan secara nasional,” papar Edi Sianturi dari E-Motion Entertainment.

Selain memilih NTR sebagai Superband, Start Up 2009 juga menobatkan David sebagai drummer terbaik. David mengalahkan dua pesaingnya, Ren dan Dimas. Di pentas Superband Concert itu, David sempat ngejam bareng Yoyo, drummer Padi yang meraih gelar Best Drummer dalam Festival Band Se-Jawa-Bali di usia 13 tahun.

Lebih Dekat Dengan Pee Wee Gaskins

Donald “Pee Wee” Gaskins adalah salah seorang pembunuh tersadis dalam sejarah. Tercatat kurang lebih 100 kasus pembunuhan dilakukan olehnya. Tapi bukan itu pembahasan kita sekarang. Dengan mengambil nama Pee Wee Gaskins, sebuah band salah Jakarta mencoba mencari arti filosofis dari nama band mereka. Pee Wee, yang berarti kecil, tapi bisa mempunyai kemampuan di atas rata-rata. Dan band yang merasa masih kecil ini berharap bisa menjadi besar, tapi tentu saja bukan dengan cara membunuh.

Inilah mereka, Pee Wee Gaskins! Band yang dimotori oleh Dochi (gitar&vokal), Sansan (gitar&vokal), Omo (synthesizer), Aldy (drum), Eye (bass) ini baru saja mengeluarkan album kedua mereka.

Setelah sukses dengan album sebelumnya, Stories From Out Highschool Years di tahun 2000, kini mereka punya senjata baru. Berbekal nama The Sophomore, album ini sangat terasa penuh semangat. Tengok langsung lagu andalan di track no 2 yang berjudul Welcoming The Sophomore.

Nuansa remaja terasa kental di lagu berbahasa inggris ini, teriakan ala cheerleader bersahut-sahutan dengan beat penuh semangat dan bunyi-bunyian synthesizer. Bangun siang, buka jendela kamarmu, cuci muka, segera berangkat ke kampus, dan tinggalkan kamar berantakanmu itu. Seolah itulah gambaran suasana lagu ini. Penuh semangat untuk menyambut yang akan datang. Selanjutnya menunggu anda, Di Balik Hari Esok, lagi-lagi lagu penuh semangat.

Vokal bersahutan dan saling mengisi memang menjadi warna khas Pee Wee Gaskins. Part gitar yang padat dan penggunaan bebunyian synthesizer yang catchy menjadi ramuan yang sangat segar. Tatiana dan Berdiri Terinjak adalah 2 lagu dari album perdana mereka. Khusus untuk Berdiri Terinjak, mereka menggandeng Saski, penyanyi remaja yang juga baru menanjakan karirnya kembali. Pemilihan yang tepat, karena suara vokal Saski terdengar sangat pas dipadukan dengan musik yang diusung gerombolan anak muda ini.

Dengan total 13 track, terdiri dari sebuah intro, 8 lagu berbahasa inggris, 4 lagu berbahasa indonesia, anda juga bisa menemukan sedikit part akustik dari lagu Di Balik Hari Esok yang disembunyikan oleh mereka. Kurang? Coba cek sleeve albumnya. Selain sedikit masalah pada ukuran font penulisan liriknya yang terlalu kecil, rasanya tidak ada masalah serius. Bahakan DW menilai sleeve album ini cukup unik. Warna kuning dan oranye mendominasi, dengan gambar seorang pria berkacamata dan memegang buku, berdiri diatas tumpukan barang dan menatap mentari terbit.
